"Shelter In Place" Kits

IN AN EMERGENCY ONE DOES NOT HAVE TIME TO PUT TOGETHER NEEDED ITEMS!

Prepare a kit ahead of time and put it in a convenient place in the room you have selected to Shelter-In-Place. Make sure all school officials know about the kit and where it is. To learn more download the Shelter-in-Place Pamphlet (pdf).

SUPPLIES
	A battery operated radio and extra batteries.
	A flashlight and extra batteries.
	Flashlight Rechargeable: *Light -* *shake to charge -* The Forever Light Electronics brings you the last flashlight you’ll ever need to buy ... and it never requires batteries or bulbs! Just shake a few times and it gives you up to five minutes of continuous bright light! Optional - see below.
	Two-way radios for internal communication with other staffs. Remember: Communication with the outside should be held to emergencies within the SIP locations. These are open channels for monitoring purposes, possibly to learn if it is safe to leave your shelter location with students. These channels can be monitored by all. Optional - see below.
	Many potential terrorist attacks could send tiny microscopic "junk" into the air. For example, an explosion may release very fine debris that can cause lung damage, as in the 911 bombing of the towers. These masks are for controlling dust and/or smells to minimize respiratory problems.
	*Toilet tissue provided (If your designated shelter does not have restroom facilities, a bucket and sheet may be used. Be sure these items are added along with toilet tissue if indicated.)*
	Plastic sheeting, scissors, and duct tape to seal doors, windows, vents, inset cabinets, mirrors, electrical outlets and switches, etc. Precut and label the sheeting to save time to cover doors, windows, vents and inset cabinets, mirrors, electrical outlets and switches, etc. (Make sure you cut the plastic at least six inches larger than openings so you can tape it to the wall or floor.)
	A first aid kit. *A basic minimal kit is provided. Consider augmenting this kit with additional supplies from you local hospital or clinics.*
	Towels and washcloths.
	Bottled water and small cups are provided. Too much water means more need for a restroom; dehydration, is a concern in any crisis. Fill the gallon water container, provided, as soon as possible from the building water supply and hang it from the wall. This is not for drinking but washing and wetting cloths. *Note the expiration date printed on the bottled water and replace it before that date.*
	Nonperishable, sealed foods and snacks should be added to your SIP Kit and rotated regularly by your Food Service Department.
	List of activities for students and staff (included). Additional items might include magazines, books, and activities to keep students occupied, provided by school.
*Misc. Items*	*Name tags, notebooks, pens, markers, tape and caution tape. Student records, provided by school. Crisis Plan "provided by school", (Keys* can help, if school does not have an effective plan)**
